The smart strobe feature of the EVA assists a technician in determining the speed of a rotating component. This could be helpful if a vibration of a certain frequency was read on the EVA, and you are attempting to locate the component that is rotating at that speed. This is particularly useful for engine speed related vibrations. Warning: If a pulley is rotating 20 times per second, the line made on the pulley will appear to hold still with the strobe frequency set at 10 Hz, 20 Hz, 40 Hz, 80 Hz, and 160 Hz. Be sure you are using the frequency that corresponds to the calculated rotational speed of the pulley to avoid misdiagnosis.
Attach an inductive timing light to the EVA’s trigger wire, the loop of wire on the top of the EVA.

Power up the EVA. From the main menu, as shown below, select "Smart Strobe" with the Down Arrow key, then press the ENTER key.

then press

Enter the estimated rotational frequency of the component you will be testing. (The allowed frequency range is 10 - 200 Hz.) Refer to component speed calculations for assistance.

then press

then press

As an option, you may press the RPM/Hz button to view strobe RPM rather than Hz.

Make a single mark on the rotating object who's rotational speed you wish to find.

Start the object rotating.
Shine the timing light on the rotating object who's rotational speed you wish to find.

If the mark you made on the object appears to hold still, it is rotating at the frequency of the smart strobe.
If the mark you made on the object does not hold still, try adjusting the frequency of the smart strobe up or down until the mark you made on the object appears to hold still.
